3 Ways to Find Inspiration Beyond Other Photographers’ Work – Part I

As a photographer, finding inspiration is an ongoing journey that fuels my creativity. While it’s easy to get caught up in scrolling through other photographers’ work, I’ve discovered that true inspiration lies beyond our industry. In this article, I’ll share three personal ways I find inspiration that don’t involve looking at other photographers’ work.

Let’s dive into Part I and explore the magic of Pinterest as a unique source of creative ideas.

1. Embracing Pinterest’s Versatility

When I’m looking for inspiration, Pinterest has become my companion. Instead of narrowing my search to photography-related terms like “family photo inspiration,” I’ve found it more exciting to explore different aesthetics. So instead, you can search for “beach aesthetic,” “modern aesthetic,” or “moody aesthetic.” What awaits you are colorful boards, mesmerizing lighting, and captivating artworks that spark your imagination.

2. Thinking Beyond Photography

As a mentor in the photography community, I often emphasize the value of looking beyond our industry for inspiration. Pinterest, in particular, offers a wealth of ideas beyond photography itself. What you can do is you can venture into various categories such as home decor, vision board ideas, fashion and style, celebrities, and movies. By immersing yourself in these diverse areas, you can discover unique perspectives that shape the way you approach your photography sessions. It’s these outside influences that breathe new life into our work and help us stand out.

3. Celebrating Uniqueness

In a world where talented photographers are all around, it’s important to carve out a distinctive artistic path. While admiring other photographers’ work is tempting, I’ve found that relying solely on it can unintentionally stifle my photography. That’s why we all can turn to Pinterest and other unconventional sources for inspiration. By integrating a wide range of influences into our photography, we can create something truly unique.

Conclusion

As a photographer, seeking inspiration is an ever-evolving process. I’ve come to realize that there’s a whole world of creative ideas waiting to be discovered beyond the realm of other photographers’ work. Pinterest has become an invaluable tool for me in this journey.

By exploring different aesthetics and venturing into non-photography categories, we can tap into a wellspring of inspiration that can redefine our approach to photography. Embracing uniqueness and infusing our work with diverse influences will allow us to stand out in a sea of talented photographers.

Stay tuned for Part II, where I’ll share two more personal ways I find inspiration that extend beyond the realm of photographers’ work.
